In the middle of a 24-hour gambling event, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, wanted to continue his game without taking a break. He asked for some roast meat to be placed between two slices of bread so he could play while eating with one hand. Others began to order "the same as the Sandwich", and so the food of legends was born.
